Something that really rang true for me in this chapter was that the ESL students don't want to be treated as a child. Just because they do not know higher thinking words, doesn't mean they don't think higher level thoughts. They also want to have their lives and experiences validated. They want to be the teacher sometimes. They want to talk about what things are like in their homes or in their home country.
It is very important for all students to feel that they have something valuable to contribute. The things that they know can be valuable but they don't realize how important those things can be. A good teacher brings these things out in her students; allowing them to teach her at the same time she is teaching them.
